Truck ISO ABS / EBS Susie – What Is It?

November 29th, 2017 Comments off

Faulty ISO7638 Line Can Cause Fatal Accidents

Some drivers aren’t aware of the role Of the ISO ABS / EBS Susie!

aide automotive have seen recent reports in the media of articualted truck drivers knwloedge of the ISO 7638 Susie.
We offer credit to the below article to Don Bur Ltd.
There is disturbing evidence to suggest that some drivers aren’t aware of the role and critical importance of the ABS ISO7638 line for articulated trailerswhilst in transit or, more worryingly, are deliberately leaving it disconnected.
The use of the ABS ISO7638 line (otherwise known as the EBS/ABS line) became law in May 2002 where the tractor and trailer are both provided with connections.
The EBS/ABS ‘Suzie’ connection provides electrical and data feeds to the trailer’s ECU or ‘brain’. The ECU then controls the anti-lock braking system (ABS), load sensing (LSV), roll stability (RSS) and suspension control which regulates the correct trailer ride height and, in turn, the overall trailer height.
So why then might a driver leave it disconnected? There are, surprisingly, a couple of reasons. Firstly, the roll stability system (RSS) automatically applies the brakes if the trailer is going too fast round a bend. This has an impact on both speed and fuel economy and, if a driver is either in a rush or targeted against fuel consumption, they might be tempted to disable this ‘inconvenient’ feature.
The other apathetically induced reason is that it just “doesn’t seem to do anything”. Indeed, when the driver pulls away, his/her brakes and lights will appear to work. What the driver may not understand is that they are more likely to experience jack-knifing, aquaplaning, brake lock, rollover, bridge strike and, more commonly, the fact that the 44T rig just won’t be able to stop as quickly when trying to avoid that pram that’s just peeked out from a line of parked cars.
So, just in case there is any lingering doubt, failure to connect the ABS ISO7638 line correctly results in the risk of catastrophic, life-threatening accidents. If the driver fails to use the line/ ‘Suzie’ correctly and there is a collision in which someone is killed, then the driver can face a charge of manslaughter.
aide automotive market a ISO7638 cable with fault indicator, so as well as having the cable correctly connected a driver can also be notified of any faults within the system. Again an electrical fault could have the same catastrophic effects as the ISO Susie cable being non connected.
ISOCheck lights bright RED when a fault is identified, if good to go the ISOCheck is continually lit bright GREEN.

What Is The ISO EBS Truck & Trailer Lead

How does the EBS truck & trailer Susie lead work?
Everyone seems to have there own ideas how it works, ranging from; “if it’s not plugged in your trailer brakes wont work”, & “it’s only a back up power anyway”
Both are incorrect!
The truth is…
The Electronic Braking System (EBS) Susie or the ISO 7638 (its correct name) is essential for the trailers Electronic Braking System (EBS) to operate correctly.
So, if a truck has an ISO7638 socket a tractor and trailer must be connected with an ISO7638 Susie and the EBS must be working correctly!
Also this means the EBS warning light the truck operator should be checking is in the cab and not the one on the trailer headboard (if there is one).
This is where the problems start, how does the EBS lead actually work, well this is how:
Pin 1 in most trucks is permanent live
Pin 2 is switched ignition live
Pin 3 is common return to battery negative
Pin 4 is common return to battery negative
Pin 5 is the warning light control (positive)
Pin 6 is “CAN” High
pIn 7 is “CAN” Low
Pin 5 which is the warning light control wire, this pin seems to be continually misunderstood. Some people think pin 5 is controlled by the trucks EBS system or even by the truck itself, both of these are incorrect, how it works is quite simple, a basic explanation is detailed below:
Power from the truck battery routes to a fuse, then to the ignition switch and then to the warning light in the dash board, finally then to pin 5 in the socket.
When an EBS Susie ISO7638 lead is connected to the trailer the trailer EBS system sees 24 volts down pin 5, which and then reduces that voltage inside the trailer ECU to below 5 volts (earth) which then activates the EBS light on in the truck cab.
Once a truck & trailer is in motion and the the trailer EBS system is happy with the wheel speed signals, the ecu then raises the voltage back up to 24 volts and the warning light in the cab goes out, if a fault appears when a truck & trailer is on the road, the ecu lowers the voltage again activating the In Cab Warning Light.(Please Note This Is a Basic Description).
An easy way to test the truck & trailer ISO Connection socket is the ISOCheck

EBS ISOCheck Now Available In Addition To the ABS ISOCheck – Review Products Details & Buy Online

Commercial Vehicle Equipment Supplier aide automotive Has Launched An Updated Version Of The ISOCheck

ISOCheck tests a trucks’ ISO sockets in order to help identify ABS or EBS faults.

The latest iteration of the system – ISOCheck EBS – has been designed to test electronic braking systems incorporating a CAN line test.

“Trucks that were first used on or after 1 May 2002 must be fitted with A ISO 7638 connection,”

“If a truck is fitted with an Electronic Brake System, and is also towing a trailer that is fitted with EBS, then a 7-core cable must be used.

Like the ISOCheck ABS tester, ISOCheck EBS tests the ISO Socket 7638 pins 1 to 5, but also tests pins 6 and 7, the EBS CAN lines.

Alongside the standard ABS & EBS ISOChecks we can also offer a diagnostic EBS ISOCheck.

ISOCheck EBSPlus test pins 1 to 7, and identifies the exact pin at fault.

Once the initial power test is complete with a RED fault light, the ISOCheck will then go into diagnostic mode and flash a count sequence in relation to the faulty pin,

The ISOCheck product range has benefited from a complete redesign, incorporating the latest electronics technology which enables future proofing truck and trailer brake systems.

ISOCheck can be used to test all Wabco, Knorr-Bremse and Haldex systems, from the early generations to the latest.

Testing is simple and easy,

ISOCheck can be used in many ways: fault-finding by the roadside or as an inspection sheet test within a workshop.

ISOCheck really becomes the perfect test tool on a dark wet night. The quick test and the bright (GREEN) OK / (RED) FAULT indicator increases test and repair efficiency.

The system can also be used continuously between a unit and trailer as a constant visual aide.

ISOCheck Re Launch & New User Guide

The ISO tester is an advanced circuit tester, it tests a trucks ISO 7638 socket, trailer susie and ABS/EBS functions.
With the launch now well under way, we can detail here the latest user guide.
When using the ISOCheck on a tractor and trailer, please make sure all health & Safety procedures are in place.
The ISOCheck is a test product & a diagnostic tool, the test lead will quickly identify where the fault is .i.e. on a tractor unit, a trailer or the existing Susie lead.
Testing a Tractor Unit
Firstly make sure the ignition is off in the tractor unit, remove the existing Susie lead that is fitted into the ISO socket.
Apply the ISOCheck to the ISO7638 socket on the tractor unit, fit the end with the clear Perspex modification, for future reference this is called “the ISOIndicator”.
Turn on the ignition, with all voltages and earths correct and also the ABS warning light “off” the ISOIndicator will light up GREEN.
If any of the voltages, earths or the warning light circuit is faulty, then the ISOIndicator will light up RED (or warning light on), this indicates a fault with the tractor unit, with the EBSPlus version the lead will now go into diagnostic mode and flash a count sequence in relation to the pin that is at fault. i.e. 5 flashes indicates PIN 5 “the warning light control wire”.
If the ISOCheck Truck Test resulted in Green and to confirm the trailer has a fault, not follow the trailer test procedure.
Testing the Trailer
Turn the truck ignition off.
Plug the ISOCheck Indicator into the trailer, turn on the ignition. The trailer warning light should activate on the truck dash board and the ISOCheck will light up RED.
The warning light should go out after 2 seconds and the ISOCheck will go GREEN, this means the trailers braking system is working at standstill.
If the warning light stays on, then drive the tractor and trailer above 10KPH, the warning light should go out and the ISOCheck will go GREEN. This proves the braking system is working correctly.
If all is working correctly and there is still an ABS fault light, this would mean the existing Susie lead is probably faulty. If the tester stays RED after a drive, stop the unit and trailer and remove the ISOCheck from the trailer. If the tester stays RED there is a power supply fault from the tractor unit or warning light fault, if the ISOCheck Indicator goes GREEN then there is a fault in the trailer system.

ABS Warning lights, what do they mean?

This may be a common question from drivers but do we all really know the answer?

Well lets make it simple! There are only three main light sequences that you really need to be concerned with, they are;

1. ON/OFF – At standstill

2. ON – Until the vehicle is driven above 7 kph then OFF

3. ON/OFF/ON – Until the vehicle is driven above 7 kph

With the introduction of programmable warning lights in EBS systems it has become a bit harder to know what a drivers dashboard should be doing but with a couple of simple tests the answer is there. If the truck and trailer are both ABS sockets, start by just connecting the trailer and turn on the ignition, the trailer warning light in the cab should come on, if the light goes ON/OFF then this is the sequence, if the light goes ON/OFF/ON, then this is the sequence, if the light is ON and stays on then drive the truck and trailer above 7kph, if the light goes OFF then this is your sequence. However please note if the light stays ON after a test drive then there is a fault in the system which requires maintenance before the truck and trailer can be utilised.

So how can we decide if the fault lies with a truck or trailer?

Also to make matters worse newer trucks now have an LCD or electronic dashboard, so we need to establish which light is actually for the trailer. With each manufacturer having individual lights it can be quite confusing.

So this is where the ISOCheck can be used, the ISOCheck is not only used to test the power from the truck but can be used to show you the warning light function of your trailer.

First plug the ISOCheck Indicator into the trucks ABS Socket, turn on the ignition, this will test all power form the truck, and if all is OK the ISOCheck will light up GREEN, if there is a fault RED. Once the truck is proven to be OK, turn the ISOCheck around and connect the ISOCheck Indicator into the trailers ASB Socket and the normal end into the truck, ignition on and the warning light in the cab should come on and the ISOCheck Indicator will turn RED as the warning light is ON. If the warning light in the cab then goes out, then the ISOCheck will turn to GREEN. If this happens it not only proves again that the truck power is OK but also it proves the trailers ABS is working.

The next step is to test drive the trailer above 7 kph, if the warning light comes on while starting to move then the ISOCheck will turn RED. Stop the truck and trailer and remove the ISOCheck indicator from the ABS Socket on the trailer, if the ISOCheck stays RED then the fault is on the truck, if it turns GREEN then the fault is on the trailer. The ISOCheck is as simple as that! Ideal for workshop fitters and drivers the ISOCheck pinpoints faults with the truck or trailer even when mismatching old trucks with new trailers and vice a versa, saving time and money by directing the repairer to the correct area.

EBS ABS Brake Tester

May 6th, 2010 Comments off

Ford & Slater the well known midlands DAF dealer, recently purchased 13 ISOCheck Test Leads for use in all depots.

ISOCheck is the ideal first step to check the electrical information that runs between a tractor unit and trailer. Whether the trailer is EBS or ABS the ISOCheck will check all voltages and earths on the ISO 7638 socket, if any pins are the ISO socket are incorrect the ISOCheck will light up RED, if all pins are correct the ISOCheck will light up GREEN.

ISOCheck is the ideal tool to save time and confusion by directing the user to the tractor unit or trailer.

The ISOCheck also checks the trailer and existing suzie, once the tractor unit is tested, turn the ISOCheck around so the indicator plugs into the trailer, again RED equals fault but with the trailer! Two greens and a ABS warning light on in the cab would suggest the existing suzie lead is at fault.

The ISOCheck is ideal for Ford & Slater as they can confirm tractor units are producing the correct information when under service or inspection, a quick and simple test rather than the confusion of using multimeters!

Finding a defective ABS in cab warning light means operators cannot afford to ignore ABS warnings especially as VOSA up their roadside checks. The ISOCheck Test Lead, is a simple device which quickly confirms the correct information is being supplied from the unit to the trailer and from the trailer to the unit.

Dri-Pak the household cleaning product company have recently purchased an ISOCheck from aide automotive and found it a great asset to their business. Ian their workshop manager says ISOCheck has increased the efficency of his delivery vehicles. Dri Pak use both their own vehicles and also sub contract drivers. They’ve experienced issues when a driver changes trailer and suddenly an ABS warning light appears. The difficultly lies in tracking down where the problem is, in the Truck or the Trailer? ISOCheck can quickly determine where the issue is so that the problem can be rectified!  This simple solution takes the headache away from busy workshops.
