Since April 2014 the DVSA have been recommending commercial vehicles undertake 4PSV or  Truck brake tests per year!

Many operators have moved with the guidance but still over 2 years passed many commercial vehicle operators are unaware of the guidance.

The guidance states:

ABS Tester For Bus & Coach

The EBS/ABS Sensor Master is an easy to use device which will confirm each EBS/ABS sensor is operational and effective. By connecting to the sensor socket on each wheel, individual sensor faults can easily be identified. The Master also tests the exciter ring and the distance between the ring and sensor.

Problems with EBS / ABS systems fitted to Coaches and buses, are best diagnosed via a vehicle’s Electronic Control Unit (ECU). However, since 80% of all EBS / ABS problems are sensor related, by connecting to the sensor socket on each wheel, you are, in effect, taking the quickest and most direct route.

The exciter ring is a critical part of an ABS system on a truck or trailer. Exciter rings are open to the elements and likely to corrode or suffer damage from road debris. Whatever the cause of damage to the ring or the disc itself may still have plenty of life left in it. By diagnosing that the problem is the exciter ring not the brake disc, workshops can save operators unnecessary costly repairs.

ABS and EBS systems use exciter rings for a wheel sensor to produce a voltage so the ECU can establish if the wheel is turning or not. How Trailer Air Brakes Work
Trailer air brakes by default are ON, compressed air is forced from the tractor or cab unit to apply pressure to release the brakes.

Without compressed air the trailer air brake system is not activated and the trailer remains stationary, so, for example, it cannot roll away. The air line hose is integral to the trailer and cannot be easily removed.

Trailer Air Line Lock fits onto the red line which is the pneumatic high pressure hose that connects the pressurised air supply from the cab/tractor unit to the trailer. Trailer Air Line Lock fits all makes of air hose couplers and push-to-connect tube fittings.

By this Hybrid vehicles are generally equipped with dual voltage systems. Though most of the electrical system is safe standard 12-volt, the drive motor and related components operate well in excess of 100 volts.

Hybrids have been called a “bridge” toward pure electric vehicles. In other words, they are a compromise, so another qualifier is they can be considered good, better, and best compromises.

Hybrid cars are sometimes mistakenly confused with electric vehicles. Hybrids are most often gasoline-burning machines that utilize their electric bits to collect and reuse energy that normally goes to waste in standard cars. Theoretically, diesel-electric hybrids would be even more fuel-efficient, but hybrid systems and diesel engines both represent extra cost. All petrol-electric hybrids utilise a battery pack and electric motor. Engineers have come up with various ways to keep the battery charged short of plugging the car in. An exception is – as you might have guessed – the plug-in hybrid which can partially recharge on the road, but needs to be plugged in because its battery is too large for the car to efficiently recharge it on the go.

Simple maintenance on a hybrid electric car shouldn’t be avoided just because of a potential high voltage batteries. A little caution is all it takes to do routine maintenance and everyday fixes on a hybrid electric car

The safety threshold is low and narrow, an electrical shock with as little as 50 volts can prove fatal. To warn technicians and operators of these high voltage circuits, the cables are wrapped in a bright orange casing. To safely maintain and repair these components, the system must be de-powered, a task that is absolutely best left to trained technicians.
