ALTip Ltd Start A Fleet Install Of Camera’s & TankGuard

ALTip is a Derbyshire haulage business operating from Swadlincote, servicing the quarry industry in the area to destinations near and far. ALTip is a story which has developed over a period spanning nearly 5 years.

ALTip has made a considerable investment in making the truck fleet as safe as possible with the currently available technology. Installing 360 Deg Cameras and fuel theft prevention alarms is that start of a continued investment to meet the Silver FORS accreditation.

What is FORS For?
The aim of FORS is simple. One over-arching scheme that encompasses all aspects of safety, fuel efficiency, economical operations and vehicle emissions. FORS is a voluntary scheme that helps improve operators’ performance in each of these areas.
For vehicle operators, it offers peace of mind that they are meeting their legislative requirements, as well as helping to increase efficiency, reduce costs and win work.
FORS provides a quality and performance benchmark for van, lorry, mini-bus, coach and bus operators and allows access to a range of exclusive accreditation benefits.
Accreditation also provides us with the tools to become safer, greener and more efficient. It is an excellent way to prove to our existing and potential customers our credentials as a high performing operator who adheres to high quality standards.

Lorry emissions checks to start at the roadside

October 19th, 2017 Comments off

Truck Emission Testing DVSA

From August 2017, roadside checks of lorries carried out by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) will include an emissions check.

The DVSA are set to target lorry drivers and operators who try to cheat vehicle emissions. The new checks will target those who break the law and will help to improve air quality.

In May 2017, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs published a draft plan to improve air quality by reducing nitrogen dioxide levels in the UK.

This included looking at ways to reduce emissions produced by vehicles, including those used commercially. A final plan will be published by 31 July.

Fraudulent emissions readings

The DVSA’s enforcement staff, and their European counterparts, have found evidence that drivers and operators use emissions cheat devices to cut the cost of operating.

These include:

Using devices designed to stop emissions control systems from working
Removing the diesel particulate filter or trap

Using cheap, fake emission reduction devices or diesel exhaust fluid

Using illegal engine modifications which result in excessive emissions
Removing or bypassing the exhaust gas recirculation valve

Taking action against emission cheats

DVSA enforcement officers will give the driver and operator 10 days to fix the emissions system if they find a vehicle with tampered emissions readings. If the emissions system isn’t fixed within 10 days, DVSA will issue a fine and stop the vehicle being used on the road.

DVSA enforcement staff can insist that a vehicle be taken off the road immediately if they find a driver or operator is repeatedly offending.

Working with the EU

DVSA will investigate all Great Britain operators cheating emissions and pass the findings to the Traffic Commissioners for Great Britain, who have the power to remove operator licences.

DVSA will also continue to work with counterpart agencies across Europe, and further afield, to make sure that all offences committed by non-Great Britain hauliers are dealt with locally.

DVSA Chief Executive, Gareth Llewellyn, said: DVSA’s priority is to protect you from unsafe drivers and vehicles. We are committed to taking dangerous vehicles off Britain’s roads and this new initiative to target emissions fraud is a key part of that. Anyone who flouts the law is putting other road users, and the quality of our air, at risk. We won’t hesitate to take these drivers, operators and vehicles off our roads.”

Even though the roadside checks will be to search out the cheat devices, the operators who omit emissions over the required standards could be penalised.

Checking commercial vehicle emissions within inspection intervals will confirm no emission regularities on the roadside.

Electronic Brake System (EBS) Trailer Testing With ISOCheck

October 11th, 2017 Comments off

What Is The ISO EBS Truck & Trailer Lead

How does the EBS truck & trailer Susie lead work?
Everyone seems to have there own ideas how it works, ranging from; “if it’s not plugged in your trailer brakes wont work”, & “it’s only a back up power anyway”
Both are incorrect!
The truth is…
The Electronic Braking System (EBS) Susie or the ISO 7638 (its correct name) is essential for the trailers Electronic Braking System (EBS) to operate correctly.
So, if a truck has an ISO7638 socket a tractor and trailer must be connected with an ISO7638 Susie and the EBS must be working correctly!
Also this means the EBS warning light the truck operator should be checking is in the cab and not the one on the trailer headboard (if there is one).
This is where the problems start, how does the EBS lead actually work, well this is how:
Pin 1 in most trucks is permanent live
Pin 2 is switched ignition live
Pin 3 is common return to battery negative
Pin 4 is common return to battery negative
Pin 5 is the warning light control (positive)
Pin 6 is “CAN” High
pIn 7 is “CAN” Low
Pin 5 which is the warning light control wire, this pin seems to be continually misunderstood. Some people think pin 5 is controlled by the trucks EBS system or even by the truck itself, both of these are incorrect, how it works is quite simple, a basic explanation is detailed below:
Power from the truck battery routes to a fuse, then to the ignition switch and then to the warning light in the dash board, finally then to pin 5 in the socket.
When an EBS Susie ISO7638 lead is connected to the trailer the trailer EBS system sees 24 volts down pin 5, which and then reduces that voltage inside the trailer ECU to below 5 volts (earth) which then activates the EBS light on in the truck cab.
Once a truck & trailer is in motion and the the trailer EBS system is happy with the wheel speed signals, the ecu then raises the voltage back up to 24 volts and the warning light in the cab goes out, if a fault appears when a truck & trailer is on the road, the ecu lowers the voltage again activating the In Cab Warning Light.(Please Note This Is a Basic Description).
An easy way to test the truck & trailer ISO Connection socket is the ISOCheck

Trail Weigh Is A Modern On Board Trailer Weight Monitor System.

October 4th, 2017 Comments off

New Product – Trail Weigh

aide automotive are pleased to release a NEW product to the Commercial Vehicle Product Range, Trail Weigh is a modern On Board Trailer Weight Monitor system.

Trail Weigh is an on-board weighing indicator ideally suited to bulk liquid, grain, powder tankers or forestry transport trailers operating (EBS) Electronic Braking Systems.
Trail Weigh accurately measures the trailers load while loading is taking place with a preset alarm overload. It achieves this by making sure the tractor Park brake is applied, releasing the service brake on the trailer allowing air bags to settle out, before rechecking weight.
When viewing the Trail Weighs display (mounted on the side of a trailer), the loading and total weight will be displayed, optional weight alarm settings are easily programmed. Trail Weigh continually monitors the EBS CAN messages, therefore can identify if the trailer is moving, this information prevents false alarms, ideal for tankers as moving liquid prevents other On Board Trailer Monitors offering correct weight measurements.
As Trail Weigh utilises the trailers technology, the out lay cost for a system is relatively low compared to other On Trailer Board Weighing Systems.
